A California startup aircraft manufacturer and designer intends to construct its initial factory in a $4.7 billion investment, with the support of over $1.5 billion in incentives from the North Carolina government.
JetZero of Long Beach, California, has announced that the number of positions it will generate will surpass 14,000. Tarheel State leaders stated that the number of jobs created by this singular investment is the highest in the state’s 235-year history in the Triad, which is home to Greensboro.
According to the state, the average annual remuneration for jobs will be $89,340, which is higher than the current average salary in Guilford County of $60,195. According to the state, the JetZero plant’s payroll will have an impact of $1.3 billion.
The efficacy of financial incentives for private businesses to expand or relocate to a new state is a topic of debate among economists. The use of wage scales as an indicator is called into question due to the fact that the salaries of a small number of corporate executives can result in a higher average, while the median wage is not affected in the same way.
“North Carolina offers the ideal combination of talent, infrastructure, and forward-thinking leadership to support our mission to reshape aviation,” the founder and CEO, Tom O’Leary, said in a statement.

On Thursday, the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee approved $1.57 billion in incentives, which includes a prospective Job Development Investment Grant of up to $1.02 billion over a 37-year period. The commissioners of Guilford County contributed an additional $76 million in incentives.
The state stated that the grant payments will not commence until the company establishes and sustains 10,000 employment within the first eight years of operation. Upon achieving that objective, additional grants would be awarded over the next 29 years, contingent upon the achievement of performance objectives.
According to a press release from the state, “Like all grants from the JDIG program, any state payments only occur following performance verification each year by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets.”
The Z4 commercial airplane will be produced at the Greensboro factory by the company. The company stated that it will be fuel-efficient, feature “state-of-the-art engineering,” and provide an enhanced experience for passengers and flight personnel. According to JetZero, the aircraft could decrease fuel utilization by up to 50% when contrasted with comparable aircraft.
JetZero reported that United Airlines has made an investment in the company and has the potential to purchase up to 200 aircraft.

According to the California-based organization, which was established in 2020, the initial commercial demonstration flight is anticipated to occur in 2027.
