Man in Mental Health Crisis Shot and Killed by Orange County Deputy

Orange County, FL — A man experiencing a mental health crisis was shot and killed by an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy on Saturday, officials said.

Deputies responded to a home at 203 N. Ortman Drive after receiving a 911 call reporting a person acting erratically in the area. Upon arrival, the man’s father informed officers that his son was inside a bedroom armed with a knife.

Officers attempted to communicate with the man for about five minutes before he exited the room. Sheriff John Mina reported that three deputies were standing in a hallway when the man suddenly barged out, wielding the knife.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the man allegedly tried to stab one of the deputies and reached for the officer’s gun while swinging the knife. In response, a deputy discharged his firearm, striking the man multiple times.

Deputies on the scene provided first aid until paramedics arrived and transported the man to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

During the incident, one deputy was injured after falling backward into a bathtub, cutting the back of his head. The deputy was taken to a hospital and treated for lacerations, Sheriff Mina said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
