Woman Sentenced to Jail, Probation after Fatal Macomb County Crash

A woman who admitted to using her phone’s GPS when she ran a red light, causing a deadly crash in Macomb County, has been sentenced.

Courtney Ellise Niezgoda, 28, was driving on M-53 in Washington Township on February 12, 2024, when she ran the red light at 32 Mile Road. Her vehicle collided with another car, killing 63-year-old Tina Yaney.

This week, Niezgoda was sentenced to three years of probation, with the first eight months to be served in jail. As part of her punishment, she must also complete 100 hours of community service. She had previously entered a no-contest plea to one count of reckless driving causing death.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said the sentencing followed a “thorough and well-reasoned analysis of the facts and circumstances of the case.”

“This case is a tragic reminder that choices behind the wheel can have deadly consequences,” Prosecutor Pete Lucido said in a statement. “We will continue to pursue justice for victims and do everything we can to prevent such senseless loss.”

No further details were immediately released.
