Boy, 15, Airlifted to Hospital after e-bike collision in St. Johns County

According to the sheriff’s office, a 15-year-old boy from Nocatee was airlifted to a hospital on Monday after suffering severe injuries in an accident involving an electric dirt bike in St. Johns County.

Deputies reported that the youth was operating an electric dirt bike and neglected to yield to a vehicle at the intersection of Rialto Drive and Nocatee Village at approximately 4:00 p.m.

The teenager was subsequently transported to a hospital via helicopter after being taken to Addison Park at Town Centre, according to St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

The collision occurred in the front garden of Greg Webb. He stated that he promptly rushed to assist as the first responders arrived, while everyone else waited.

“Just praying over him. Telling him that help is on the way, and just to relax. I could hear him breathing and feel his heartbeat. It was something that you don’t want to witness,” Webb said.

According to officials, the youngster was donning a helmet.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Traffic Unit of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

In just over a month, this accident was the second to occur in the vicinity involving an e-bike.

A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to a local trauma centre in April after he was involved in a severe crash while riding his e-bike on Race Track Road near Julington Creek Plantation.

The commissioners of St. Johns County had a discussion regarding a proposed ordinance regarding the safety of e-bikes last week.

County officials discussed the most recent iteration of the proposed ordinance during the meeting. Nevertheless, no decision was reached, and the commissioners opted to convert the proposal into a resolution for future consideration.
