New York, NY – Thousands of New Yorkers will soon see a boost in their bank accounts as Governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday the rollout of checks through the state’s School Tax Relief (STAR) program.
The program aims to provide property tax relief to eligible homeowners, with checks ranging between $350 and $600 for most recipients earning under $500,000. Seniors earning less than $107,300 annually may qualify for larger payments between $700 and $1,500.
“New Yorkers work hard to build their homes and communities, and STAR helps ease the tax burden,” Hochul said. “These checks offer timely relief, especially for seniors and working families.”
Some beneficiaries may have already received the relief as a tax exemption, but checks are now being issued to eligible households that opted for the credit instead.
According to the Governor’s office:
- Approximately 483,000 residents in New York City will receive STAR checks.
- On Long Island, up to 528,000 residents are set to benefit.
- Checks will begin mailing next week, with NYC residents expected to receive payments between late June and mid-July.
- Homeowners in other parts of the state will receive their checks through the fall.
The STAR program, a longstanding initiative in New York, continues to serve as a critical financial cushion for middle-class families and senior citizens facing rising property tax costs. Residents are encouraged to check their eligibility and STAR status through the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
