Salt Lake City, UT – Parking in downtown Salt Lake City may soon become significantly more expensive under a proposal aimed at boosting the city’s budget by approximately $1 million.
The Salt Lake City Council is weighing a plan that would raise the hourly rate for metered parking from $2.25 to $3.50 — a 56% increase. In addition to the rate hike, city officials are also considering extending parking enforcement hours from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The changes would mean drivers have fewer opportunities for free parking downtown. Currently, parking is free on Saturdays and after 8 p.m. on other days. Under the proposal, Saturday parking would no longer be free, though Sundays would remain exempt.
If approved, the updated parking policy would take effect in the coming months and could bring a substantial new revenue stream for the city. Officials say the additional funds would help support city services and infrastructure.
No final decision has been made yet, but public reaction and further council discussion are expected in the weeks ahead.
