LATHROP, Calif. — Police in Northern California seized nearly a ton of illegal fireworks and more than 70 homemade explosives during a traffic stop, authorities announced Monday.
The Lathrop Police Department says the bust is the result of what they called “outstanding proactive police work” as officers pulled over a vehicle and discovered 1,815 pounds of illegal fireworks along with 72 homemade explosive devices.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the Lathrop-Manteca Fire Department assisted with securing and safely removing the dangerous materials.
“As we head into the 4th of July holiday, the Lathrop Police Department remains committed to ensuring a safe and lawful celebration,” LPD said in a statement posted to social media. “Officers will continue to enforce all applicable laws related to illegal fireworks and explosives.”
Authorities confirmed that an arrest was made, though they have not released the suspect’s identity.
With the Fourth of July fast approaching, Lathrop police urged residents to celebrate responsibly and reminded the community that illegal fireworks and explosives pose a serious risk to public safety.
“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, but we must prioritize safety,” the department said.
The investigation is ongoing.
