Last weekend, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police continued to crack down on street takeovers.
In a Facebook post, IMPD stated that the multi-agency effort resulted in at least eight arrests. Throughout the weekend, police issued at least 29 citations and impounded at least two vehicles.
In its Facebook post, the IMPD specifically mentioned two reckless driving incidents.
The first of these incidents occurred Saturday night near Rockville and High School Roads. According to IMPD, a large group of 60 motorists had gathered in the area and were driving illegally.
An ISP helicopter was sent to the scene, and the group dispersed within minutes, according to IMPD. A small group of the dispersed drivers then headed to Boone County.
According to IMPD, officers from the Lebanon and Whitestown Metropolitan police departments arrested seven of the people who fled to Boone County after the street takeover at Rockville and High School Roads was broken up.
Another group of motorists dispersed from Rockville and High School Roads traveled to Interstate 465. IMPD reported that the group of motorists continued to drive recklessly on I-465.
IMPD conducted traffic stops and issued citations to the alleged reckless drivers on I-465. According to IMPD, members of the group that originally gathered at Rockville and High School Roads were also seen competing in speed races on the interstate.
The second incident mentioned in IMPD’s release occurred around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday. At the time, police reported seeing a motorcycle traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph on the interstate.
Police tracked the motorcyclist down again, this time using ISP’s helicopter, to a parking lot off Interstate 74 near Post Road. Law enforcement eventually arrested the biker for reckless driving and impounded his motorcycle.
“Reckless driving, spinning, street takeovers, rolling roadblocks, and speed contests pose a danger not only to participants but also to bystanders,” IMPD officials wrote in their Facebook post. “This behavior demonstrates a blatant disregard for Indiana law and for those using the roadway responsibly. Such actions will not be tolerated. The enforcement efforts of both IMPD and ISP are ongoing and will remain a priority.”
IMPD encourages anyone with information about street takeovers or reckless driving to call (317) 327-3811 or dial 911.
