Three victims who were injured in a mass shooting on the Michigan State University campus in 2023 have secured multi-million-dollar settlements with the college.
On February 13, 2023, a gunman stormed onto campus, killing Arielle Anderson, Alexandria Verner, and Brian Fraser and injured five others at Berkey Hall and the MSU Union.
Three of the five injured, Nathan Statly, Troy Forbush, and Yukai “John” Hao, received settlements with the university worth $29.75 million.
Statly was shot in the skull, Forbush in the chest, and Hao in the back, all of which required lengthy medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Statly received $14.25 million in compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, impairment, and limitation, as represented by Grewal Law.
Gruel Mills, Hao’s attorney, obtained $13 million in compensation for his bodily disabilities, which included pain and suffering, mental distress, impairment, and limitation.
Michigan State University issued the following statement:
“Michigan State University understands the depth of the impact of the events of February 13 and extends our deepest condolences to those injured and to their families and loved ones. Â Our university community stands with them and continues to work with them as they heal and recover from the tragedy. While the university cannot comment on any specific settlements, we truly hope reaching a resolution helps provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families.”
Grewal Law, representing Forbush, obtained $2.5 million in compensation for his injuries, pain and suffering, emotional distress, handicap, and limitation.
