San Leandro, CA — A man was found shot to death early Saturday morning in San Leandro, still holding onto his dog’s leash, according to local authorities.
San Leandro police officers responded to a report of a person down around 8:23 a.m. near the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East 14th Street. When they arrived, they discovered a man lying on his back with his dog still tethered to his hand. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the victim, believed to be in his 40s, has not yet been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin.
A neighbor in the area reported hearing a gunshot around 11:15 p.m. Friday night. Investigators believe the shooting likely occurred at that time, though the body was not discovered until the following morning.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office confirmed the man died from a gunshot wound to the back.
Remarkably, the victim’s dog was unharmed and has since been taken to a temporary shelter, officials said.
No suspect information has been released, and police are continuing to investigate the incident. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
