EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — A Long Island man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a father with a crowbar during a violent confrontation in front of the victim’s daughter, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say the fatal incident took place around 2:45 a.m. on May 18, when 46-year-old Darrell Trent allegedly arrived at the East Patchogue home of 45-year-old Carlos Bonaparte. The visit followed a dispute between Bonaparte and his girlfriend’s cousin, who reportedly called Trent to the scene.
When Trent arrived, authorities say he got out of his car wielding a crowbar and used the claw end to strike Bonaparte in the head. The crowbar penetrated Bonaparte’s skull by approximately an inch, entering his brain and fatally wounding him, according to officials.
Bonaparte’s daughter, along with several other witnesses, reportedly saw the brutal attack. The victim was rushed to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.
After the attack, Trent allegedly fled Long Island and was located days later in Ohio, where he was arrested on May 23. He was extradited back to New York and formally arraigned on a murder charge on June 9.
The investigation remains ongoing.
