Jackson Man Arrested in Fatal Ypsilanti Township Hit-and-Run

A 20-year-old man from Jackson has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a pedestrian on I-94 in Ypsilanti Township last month.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, on I-94 near the US-12 bypass. According to authorities, police had received reports of a naked man walking eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway.

Huron Valley Ambulance personnel arrived on the scene, but before they could make contact with the pedestrian, he was struck by a dark-colored sedan. The driver of the sedan did not stop after the collision.

First responders immediately rendered aid to the man, identified as a 52-year-old from Warren, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The investigation took a significant turn on Friday, June 6, when police received a phone call from an individual who believed they knew the person responsible for striking the pedestrian. The caller stated that a 20-year-old Jackson man had confided in them about being involved in a crash in that area on the date of the incident.

Troopers subsequently interviewed the suspect and located a damaged 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, which was impounded for further investigation. The 20-year-old reportedly told police that he did not stop after the collision because he had been drinking while underage.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges are expected to be requested from the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.
