Houston Couple Robbed at Gunpoint; Suspect Caught after Police Chase

A suspect involved in mugging and car theft was taken into custody early Wednesday morning following a short pursuit, during which he fired at law enforcement officials.

At approximately 2 a.m., a young couple was parking at an apartment, as reported by Lt. R. Willkens of the Houston Police Department.

“They were parallel parking by their apartment complex, and the boyfriend was out on the passenger side of the vehicle, helping her parallel park,” he said. “She was still in the driver’s side.”

In a shocking incident, Lt. Willkens reported that as she exited the vehicle, an unknown assailant approached the driver, brandishing a firearm and demanding her belongings. A confrontation broke out as the boyfriend attempted to step in, leading to a struggle before they made a dash for escape. A shocking turn of events unfolded as the mugger approached, seized their keys, and sped away in their vehicle.

Authorities successfully pursued a suspect in a vehicle theft, leading to a short-lived chase when officers attempted to make an arrest. During the initial moments of the pursuit, Lt. Willkens reported that the individual aimed a firearm and discharged it at law enforcement, yet fortunately, no officers were injured.

A dramatic scene unfolded at an apartment complex on Woodchase Drive as a suspect attempted to flee after exiting his vehicle. However, swift action from an officer led to the deployment of a taser, resulting in the suspect being apprehended and placed in handcuffs.

A grateful young couple, consisting of an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, expressed relief that no one was injured. The boyfriend communicated with KPRC 2 in Spanish, and we utilized a translator.

“I just never thought this would happen to me and my girlfriend,” he said.

He described it as an ordinary Tuesday evening. After attending a late-night church service, he and his girlfriend stepped out into the night.

“We got out of church around midnight, and we were hungry. We stopped to get something to eat on our way back home,” said the boyfriend.

Upon arriving at the girlfriend’s apartment complex, the boyfriend stepped out of the car to assist her with parallel parking. As she exited the driver’s seat, a masked figure approached, brandishing a firearm at them.

“He kept pointing the gun at us saying he wanted to kill us if I didn’t give him everything I had,” the boyfriend said.

A couple was confronted by a gunman who insisted they hand over their wallets and cash before making off with their vehicle.

In a fortunate turn of events, the boyfriend was able to reach for his phone and dial 911 for help.

Lt. Willkens observed that the unidentified man seemed to be “significantly impaired by some form of substance.” Several criminal charges are anticipated against him, though details remain undisclosed at this time.

The couple urges everyone to stay vigilant and to refrain from being outdoors during late-night hours.
