Flooding destroys road in Colorado Springs' North Cheyenne Cañon

Recent heavy rains in southern Colorado have caused significant flooding, resulting in the destruction of a section of road in the foothills just west of Colorado Springs.

Footage shared by the city reveals significant runoff in North Cheyenne Creek, alongside extensive damage to the nearby North Cheyenne Cañon Road. A section of the road has suffered significant damage, with pavement broken away and creek waters flowing rapidly beneath a collapsed area.

On Wednesday morning, the washout was initially identified. Situated roughly 1.5 miles into the canyon.

Access to North Cheyenne Cañon Park is currently restricted as officials conduct a damage assessment, resulting in the closure of both gates. Officials announce that Gold Camp Road is now restricted to local residents only.

“We are working on a plan to repair the road, and prevent further roadway damage,” the city wrote in a post on social media.

Colorado Springs Airport has noted precipitation on 12 of the past 14 days. Unpredictable weather conditions are expected to persist until next Thursday.
