Eight displaced after Columbus House Fire Destroys Carport, spreads to Home

Authorities are probing a residence fire that left eight individuals without shelter in Columbus on Friday evening.

Firefighters from the Columbus Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 900 block of Chestnut Street, as reported in a recent release. Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, encountering intense flames as an attached carport was fully consumed by fire.

Firefighters have confirmed that another home experienced melting vinyl siding as a result of the intense heat generated by the blaze. Fire crews battled the flames as they discovered the blaze had spread into the home’s interior living space and attic.

Firefighters bravely entered the residence to combat the blaze, facing challenges of “low visibility and high heat,” according to CFD. Firefighters quickly identified the source of the blaze as being situated above an extra roof structure.

Firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control after it spread to the rooftop. A homeowner was allegedly enjoying time on his front porch when informed that flames were engulfing his residence, according to CFD.

A homeowner rushed to the alley upon spotting flames in the carport and quickly dialled 911 for help. The individual informed firefighters that the carport served as a storage area during the remodelling of his home.

Shelter assistance is being offered by the American Red Cross to all displaced tenants. According to CFD, there were no injuries reported among occupants or firefighters.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
