A driver with a history of reckless driving has been charged in a fatal crash on Detroit’s West Side.
According to court records, Dwayne Proctor was driving 105 mph when he collided with another vehicle at Grand River Avenue and Telegraph Road. He reportedly ran a red light and collided with a vehicle carrying two women.
Witnesses captured video of the shocking scene after the crash as first responders worked to save the two victims trapped inside their car. A 68-year-old woman died, and a 44-year-old woman was critically injured.
A nearby business’s surveillance video captured the crash, which showed smoke exploding from both vehicles.
Dwayne Darrel Proctor drove the vehicle. He was arraigned in court this week, virtually from the hospital.
Proctor suffered multiple spinal fractures and a collapsed lung. According to court records, a four-year-old was in the car with him at the time of the crash but suffered no serious injuries. Officers reported smelling alcohol on Proctor, and a toxicology report is currently pending.
Proctor’s criminal history shows that he has a history of speeding. Most recently, in February, he was charged with reckless driving and plead guilty to drag racing. He was charged with driving while suspended in April and careless driving last month.
The judge denied him a personal bond, citing his prior record.
“He has a drinking, either drinking or narcotics conviction, which resulted in an accident from 2018. Not only that, the allegations are that he was going well past the speed limit. This court does find Mr. Proctor to be a danger,” the judge stated.
Proctor is being held under a $500,000 cash bond. His next court appearance is set for June 25.
