Douglas County, WI — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents and visitors that marijuana purchased legally in nearby states like Michigan and Minnesota remains illegal to possess or use in Wisconsin.
The warning follows the recent seizure of nearly 11.5 pounds of marijuana, according to a statement posted by the sheriff’s office. Officials emphasized that while some surrounding states have legalized marijuana for recreational use, Wisconsin law still prohibits both possession and distribution of the drug.
“If you’re going to Michigan or Minnesota to visit your drug dealer, don’t bring your ‘legal’ weed to Douglas County,” the sheriff’s office stated in a public message. “It’s not legal in Wisconsin.”
Authorities said the quantity of marijuana seized is not typical for personal use and appears consistent with drug distribution. They noted the marijuana products found are similar to those increasingly being found in schools.
“This is [an] intent to deliver and we will send you to prison,” the sheriff’s post continued.
No additional details about arrests or the location of the seizure were immediately released. However, officials reiterated their commitment to enforcing state drug laws and encouraged the public to remain aware of Wisconsin’s stance on marijuana possession.
The case remains under investigation.
