ORLANDO, Fla. — A man was shot and killed by deputies on Monday afternoon after refusing to drop a knife during a standoff at an apartment complex in Orange County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were called to the Isles at East Millenia apartments on Lake Fountain Drive around 12:45 p.m. after receiving reports that a woman had been held at knifepoint by her boyfriend throughout the night.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the woman and determined there was probable cause to arrest the 57-year-old man, officials said. However, the man had barricaded himself inside the apartment, prompting an hour-long standoff as deputies attempted to negotiate with him.

“At one point, the man came out of the room and moved toward deputies while armed with a knife,” Undersheriff Mark Canty said during a press conference. “That’s when two of our deputies fired their service weapons, striking the man.”

The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said negotiators and SWAT officers were called to the scene shortly before the shooting occurred.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. Their findings will be forwarded to the state attorney’s office for review, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
