Clackamas Deputies Search for ATM Thieves after Excavator Smash-and-Grab

Authorities in Clackamas are searching for the suspect or suspects involved in a daring ATM theft early Tuesday morning, where a stolen excavator was used to break into a US Bank.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. at the US Bank located near SE 117th Avenue and Sunnyside Road. Clackamas County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a burglary report around 4:50 a.m. and arrived to find the excavator still running, abandoned near the bank’s ATM drive-thru.

According to investigators, the suspect or suspects stole the excavator from a nearby construction site and used its boom arm to smash into two ATMs. The suspects also caused significant damage to the bank building in the process. It remains unclear how much cash was stolen during the heist.

By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the suspects had fled the area. Surveillance footage of the incident has not yet been released.

In addition to the damage to the ATMs and the bank, an SUV parked nearby was also found with its windows shattered. Authorities have not confirmed whether that damage is connected to the ATM theft.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case.
