California SNAP Recipients to receive Extra Food Assistance this Month through SUN Bucks Program

Millions of low-income families in California will see a boost in their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits this month, thanks to the continuation of the SUN Bucks program—a federal initiative designed to help children access nutritious food during the summer months.

Why It Matters

With schools closed for summer break, many children who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year face increased food insecurity. The additional SNAP benefits aim to bridge that gap and ensure families have the resources they need to provide healthy meals at home.

Nationwide, over 40 million Americans depend on SNAP to purchase essential groceries. In California alone, roughly 4 million children will benefit from this temporary financial boost.

What’s Included in the Extra Benefits

Eligible families will automatically receive a one-time $120 in food benefits per child through SUN Bucks, delivered via EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards later this month. Starting in the fall, families can also expect $40 monthly installments to further support grocery purchases.

Eligibility and Automatic Enrollment

Children are automatically enrolled in the SUN Bucks program if they:

  • Receive free or reduced-price school meals,
  • Are enrolled in CalFresh, Medi-Cal, or California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs),
  • Are in foster care, experiencing homelessness, or part of a migrant family.

For children who do not meet automatic enrollment criteria, parents and caregivers can apply by submitting a school meal application or a Universal Benefits Application to their school before September 2, 2025.

State Officials Emphasize the Impact

“We are proud that California was one of the first states in the nation to launch this new federal program last year, which is helping families in need across California,” said Jennifer Troia, Director of the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). “Last year, nearly $500 million in food purchases were made using SUN Bucks food benefits by families and caregivers in California.”

How to Use SUN Bucks

The SUN Bucks funds can be used the same way as regular SNAP benefits—by swiping an EBT card at participating grocery stores and retailers that accept SNAP. Eligible food items include fresh produce, dairy, meat, grains, and other essential groceries.

For more information or to check your eligibility status, families are encouraged to visit the official CDSS website or contact their local school district.
