At Home Files for Bankruptcy, Will Close 26 Stores Nationwide

At Home, a national retailer of home goods, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will close 26 “underperforming” stores nationwide, the company announced on Monday.

In its filing, the chain headquartered in Coppell, Texas, referenced “the persistent macroeconomic headwinds, rapidly changing tariff landscape, and internal pressures.” The closures are extensive, extending from California to New York.

“These newly imposed tariffs and the uncertainty of ongoing U.S. trade negotiations intensified the financial pressure on the company,” At Home noted, referring to President Donald Trump’s broader tariff war with major trading partners.

It also referenced the ongoing consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition in consumer preferences from brick-and-mortar stores to online shopping for home furniture and decor.

Rite Aid, Big Lots, LL Flooring, Joann Fabrics, Kohl’s, Express, JCPenney, and Macy’s are among the numerous major retailers that have announced their intention to close stores this year. At Home is the latest to join this list.
