Arizona Man who ran over Tribal Officer with Cruiser Sentenced to 4 decades in Prison

After killing a tribal police officer almost five years ago by running him over with the officer’s patrol cruiser, a Maricopa man will be imprisoned for the next forty years.

Carlos Maximilliano Galvan, 44, was given a 44-year prison term on Wednesday in relation to the passing of Bryan Brown, a police officer in Tohono O’odham.

“The FBI will not waver in our commitment to ensure those who commit acts of violence against members of law enforcement will be held accountable and punished to the fullest extent of the law,” said FBI Phoenix Acting Special Agent in Charge Jarod Brown. “Today is for Officer Bryan Brown, and his loved ones and colleagues. We hope this sentence brings a degree of comfort to Officer Brown’s family and colleagues.”

Officer Brown and a member of the U.S. Border Patrol responded to a 911 call on August 27, 2020, regarding a car who had struck a handicapped parking sign outside the Desert Diamond Casino on the Why, Arizona, reservation. After that, Galvan, the driver, allegedly struck a truck carrying two casino workers.

Galvan violently confronted the officer with a shattered bottle as Officer Brown and the Border Patrol agent arrived. Galvan got into the officer’s car and started driving in his direction as Brown manoeuvred around his police car to escape him.

Officer Brown was hit, but the Border Patrol agent managed to get out of the way. After being transported to a hospital in Phoenix, he was declared dead shortly after.

Federal prosecutors claim that after leaving, Galvan purposefully struck two Border Patrol cars responding to the incident by driving the police cruiser into State Route 85’s centre lane. Later thereafter, Galvan was arrested.

Galvan entered a guilty plea to one count of second-degree murder earlier this year.

“The defendant attacked not just Officer Brown, but our entire system of justice,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine. “Disrespect for law enforcement escalates, as it did here with a deadly consequence, which is why any assault on a law enforcement officer cannot be tolerated. Our great sorrow goes out to Officer Brown’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers. He demonstrated the ultimate dedication to duty, and we honor him.”

Officer Brown worked for the Tohono O’odham Police Department for 19 years. He was a veteran of the Army. He departed behind eight grandchildren, four stepchildren, seven children, and a wife.
