Mother Arrested after Allegedly Pinning Down, Assaulting 5-year-old Daughter in West Virginia

Lester, WV — A 40-year-old mother in West Virginia has been arrested and charged with felony child abuse after allegedly attacking her 5-year-old daughter and forcibly pulling out the child’s teeth inside their family home last week.

According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of possible child abuse at a residence in Lester, located approximately 60 miles southeast of Charleston, on Thursday. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with family members and launched an investigation.

Authorities allege that the suspect, identified as Rebecca Lee Bailey, pinned down her young daughter and forcibly removed two of the child’s bottom front teeth. It remains unclear whether Bailey used an instrument during the incident.

A witness to the assault reported hearing Bailey claim the child “had a demon in her” during the alleged attack, while holding a cross. Fortunately, another family member in the home was awakened by the disturbance, intervened, and contacted law enforcement.

Bailey was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Southern Regional Jail for processing. She faces one count of felony child abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian, or person in a position of trust resulting in bodily injury.

The child received medical attention and was placed in the care of a responsible family member. Child Protective Services and Emergency Medical Services were also dispatched to the home to ensure the child’s safety and well-being.

In a statement, Sheriff Frank Priddy and Chief Deputy Frankie Shelton commended the quick-thinking family member and the deputies for their swift response and dedication to protecting the child.

Bailey is currently being held on a $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 30 at 10 a.m. before Judge Greg Tanner.
