The police apprehended a Wisconsin man on Friday night after he fled the scene of a traffic stop for unsafe lane changes.
An officer attempted to stop a vehicle on U.S. Highway 18/151 near exit 76 at approximately 8:15 p.m. on June 20 after observing multiple unsafe lane changes, according to the Verona Police Department.
The vehicle initially halted before rapidly accelerating up the off-ramp. The driver lost control and collided with a tree at the summit of the ramp.
Michael T. Gales, the driver, fled the vehicle; however, he was apprehended without incident. He denied receiving any injuries; however, emergency medical services (EMS) responded and transported him to a hospital. He was medically cleared before being booked into jail.
According to authorities, Gales was in possession of a substantial sum of cash and marijuana. At the time, he was on active parole for endangering safety by using a firearm and had violated his parole by possessing illegal drugs.
Gales also had a documented history of fleeing from officers and multiple outstanding warrants, according to officials.
