Boise Man Arrested after Seven-Mile Wrong-Way Interstate Chase and Foot Pursuit

Boise, ID — Multiple roads in the Boise area were shut down Sunday morning after a dangerous police pursuit involving a suspect who drove for miles on the wrong side of Interstate 84 before fleeing on foot.

The incident began around 10 a.m. when an Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to pull over a truck near South Seabreeze Way and West Lake Hazel Road. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Timothy Steinnon, reportedly had two active warrants for failure to appear in court and was also linked to an aggravated battery case from the previous week.

According to the sheriff’s office, Steinnon refused to stop, leading deputies on a chase through several Boise roads, including Lake Hazel Road, North Orchard Street, West Victory Road, and West Gowen Road, eventually merging onto I-84.

The pursuit was called off after Steinnon began driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-84, posing a serious risk to public safety. Partnering agencies immediately shut down the eastbound lanes of the interstate as Steinnon continued driving the wrong way for approximately seven miles.

Steinnon eventually exited the interstate near Top Golf at the Eagle Road exit, crashing through a fence and abandoning his vehicle near Rolling Hill Drive in Meridian.

Fearing the suspect may be armed, authorities issued a CodeRed alert to nearby residents, urging them to shelter in place.

A short time later, law enforcement located Steinnon hiding in an outbuilding after the property owner called to report suspicious activity. The Ada County SWAT and crisis negotiation teams responded to the scene, and after a period of negotiation, Steinnon surrendered without further incident.

The Boise Police Department confirmed that the situation was the reason Overland Road west of Cloverdale Road remained closed to traffic for over three hours.

In addition to his outstanding warrants, Steinnon now faces felony charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, as well as misdemeanor charges of unlawful entry and resisting and obstructing officers.

The investigation remains ongoing.
